Moses Pergament’s first piano concerto, composed in 1952, finally performed in Finland.
Moses Pergament (1893-1977) was born in Helsinki and held an acclaimed composer debut concert in 1914, which featured the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite his significant musical output, he has been almost completely forgotten in Finnish musical life. Pergament’s family included many cultural figures, such as conductor Simon Parmet, pianist and composer Erna Tauro, and psychoanalyst Benjamin Rubinstein. While traveling and studying in Europe, Pergament absorbed the characteristics of modernism. During his adult years, Pergament lived in Sweden, where he faced opposition in the music world because of his background as a foreign-born Jew. Only in 1945, after three decades of activity in Sweden, was Pergament elected to the Swedish Composers’ Association – where he became the association’s first Jewish member. Pergament was a cosmopolitan, and his unique sound world combines romanticism, modernism, folk music, Jewish music, French music and several other styles.
The Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra and pianist Martin Malmgren made a world premiere recording of Moses Pergament’s Piano Concerto in 2021. The concert is part of a series of concert and recording projects aimed at rediscovering a unique but forgotten Finnish-born composer.
Program:
Hugo Alfvén: Vallflickans dans from Bergakungen (The Mountain King) Op. 37
Moses Pergament: Piano Concerto No. 1
Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 3 in C, Op. 52
Martin Malmgren, piano
Sasha Mäkilä, conductor
The concerts were realized thanks to support from Svenska kulturfonden, Konstsamfundet, Stiftelsen Tre Smeder, Eugène, Elisabeth och Birgit Nygréns stiftelse, William Thurings stiftelse, and in collaboration with Kauniainen city’s cultural services and Agora Music Collective.

Alina Sorjonen is a pianist, chamber musician, and piano teacher. Teaching is near and dear to her heart, and she is currently working as a piano teacher at the Music Institute of Keski-Uusimaa. Sorjonen has studied both in Finland, at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Sibelius Academy, and abroad in Austria at Kunstuniversität Graz and also at the Estonian Academy of Music. Her studies have included both soloist and pedagogical training. Sorjonen graduated with a master’s degree in Music in 2017. She has had many teachers over her career who have been a big part of her life for years. These teachers are Carlos Juris, Valeria Resjan, Evgeny Gashkov, Kirill Kozlovski, Sten Lassmann, and Annmaria Bodoky-Krause. The year 2017 was a big year for Sorjonen not only for her master’s degree, but it was also the year the Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra was formed. Currently, Sorjonen works as the orchestra’s General Manager and hopes this unique group of musicians can keep playing together for many years to come.

- Moses Pergament: Piano Concerto No 1
Pianist Martin Malmgren has made himself known as a versatile performer, equally at home on stage as a soloist, and chamber musician and lied pianist. With an unusually wide repertoire ranging from early baroque up until the music of our times, he takes delight in surprising his audiences by performing unjustly neglected works and composers, in addition to the standard repertoire. Always aiming at finding meaningful connections between different composers, his concert programs typically show a thoughtful approach which builds bridges between different musical styles and periods. He has founded the piano recital series Key Discoveries, and also plays in the newly-founded Helsinki Chamber Orchestra.
As a sought-after soloist, he has appeared with such orchestras as Sinfonia Lahti, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Belgrade Symphony, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Torun Philharmonic Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia, Jyväskylä Sinfonia and others, in collaboration with conductors such as Petri Sakari, Ari Rasilainen, Dalia Stasevska, Sasha Mäkilä, Eva Ollikainen, Ville Matvejeff and Erkki Lasonpalo. The interest in lesser-heard works has led to multiple performances of unjustly neglected works with orchestra such as Prokofiev’s 5th piano concerto, Hindemith’s Kammermusik (‘Klavierkonzert’) op 36 nr 1, Schumann’s Konzertstück op 92, Rachmaninoff’s 1st piano concerto, as well as the Finnish premiere of the late Elliott Carter’s “Dialogues 2”. He has performed extensively throughout Europe, USA and Israel. During 2015, he was invited as Main Guest Artist at the Pasimusic Festival in Kuopio, a festival focusing on the music of the Finnish contemporary composer Pasi Lyytikäinen. Other notable concerts during recent seasons include soloist appearances at the Music Centre in Helsinki, a nomination as “Young soloist” in “Music in the Castles and Manor Houses of Sörmland” and performances at several festivals in Sweden and Finland. Among previous projects, he has performed the complete Mazurkas by Karol Szymanowski and all Études by Claude Debussy.
In addition to his soloist career, Martin takes great interest in lied and chamber music, and enjoys close collaborations with many well-known singers and instrumentalists. Martin has often collaborated with contemporary music ensembles such as NYKY Ensemble and Focus Ensemble. He has premiered and commissioned a long list of works and actively collaborates with contemporary composers.
Performing in other venues than the usual concert halls is also of great interest for Martin, bringing classical music to places where it is less often heard. He often performs in smaller venues, including in bookshops, soirees and home concerts, where there is a possibility to interact closely with the audience. As a co-founder of the klezmer/balkan band Babalisk in his early teens, Martin has also enjoyed the experience of performing in music restaurants, folk music festivals, and on the streets of his hometown, Gothenburg. His wide interests have also led to collaborations with pop singers, jazz musicians, dancers, poets and others.
Martin holds a Bachelor of Music from Edsberg Manor/Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, where he studied piano with Mats Widlund and chamber music with Mats Zetterqvist. He continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy, with Ilmo Ranta as his main piano teacher. Other important influences include Konstantin Bogino, Jerome Lowenthal and Liisa Pohjola. With an interest in early music, Martin has also taken fortepiano masterclasses with Malcolm Bilson, Bart van Oort and Tuija Hakkila.

Suomen Laulu perustettiin keväällä 1900 Heikki Klemetin aloitteesta silloisen suuriruhtinaskunnan edustuskuoroksi ulkomaanmatkoille. Suomen Laulu aloitti mieskuorona, mutta laajeni vuonna 1907 sekakuoroksi. Heikki Klemetti rakensi Suomen Laulun kanssa pohjaa maamme kuorokulttuurille yli neljän vuosikymmenen ajan. Klemetin jälkeen kuoroa ovat johtaneet mm. Martti Turunen, Ensti Pohjola, Seppo Murto, Chifuru Matshubara, Timo Nuoranne sekä Esko Kallio.
Suomen Laulu on tehnyt lukuisia radionauhoituksia ja levytyksiä; uusin levy, Suomen Laulun joulu, ilmestyi syksyllä 2015. Suomen Laulu oli alkuaikoinaan ratkaisevassa asemassa suomenkielisen sekakuorokulttuurin luomisessa. Ajatus julkaisusarjasta “Suomen Laulun ohjelmistoa” syntyi samaan aikaan kuin Suomen Laulun sekakuorokin, tarpeesta saada uutta suomenkielistä sekakuoro-ohjelmistoa Suomen Laulun ja samalla myös kaikkien muiden suomalaisten kuorojen käyttöön.
Viime vuosina Suomen Laulu on jälleen aktivoitunut tilaamaan ja julkaisemaan sävellyksiä. Suomen Laulun ohjelmistoa -julkaisusarjan uusin teos on keväällä 2016 kantaesityksensä saanut Lotta Wennäkosken Ilman kappaleita.
Suomen Laulu tunnetaan parhaiten jokavuotisesta, kiirastorstaina esitettävästä J.S.Bachin Matteus-passiosta Johanneksenkirkossa.

Jukka Merjanen (born in 1974) started playing violin at the age of four. He later continued his studies at Edsbergs Music Institute in Stockholm, as well as in the Sibelius Academy where he made his violin diploma with highest honors and became also Master of Music in 2001.
Ever since 1998 when he won his first permanent orchestral job as a first violin player in the Helsinki Philharmonic, he’s also been a regular performer as a soloist and chamber musician in Finland and abroad.
Merjanen worked for three years in one of the world’s leading orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London. He was appointed as the Associate Concertmaster of the orchestra after a succesful audition and trial period in February 2004.
After returning back in Finland Merjanen has been a regular guest concertmaster of several Finnish orchestras, such as Helsinki Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic, Tampere Philharmonic, and has also been in leading positions in several other major Scandinavian orchestras.
Ever since August 2012 Merjanen has worked as a permanent concertmaster of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. He plays with an Andrea Guarneri 1678 violin, owned by a private person.
Along with a busy performing career, Merjanen has also founded a new music festival which started in July 2014. Southeastern Finland Chamber Music has a very high level of Finnish and international performers. Merjanen is the Artistic Director of the festival and also performs there regularly.

St. Petersburg-born Alina Sorjonen started her first piano studies at an early age, first with the guidance of her mother, later as a training student of St. Petersburg’s state Conservatory. In 1991, she moved to Finland together with her family and continued studies up to professional level. Graduating from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in 2009, Alina has studied as well in Sibelius Academy, Graz University for Music and Performing Arts and Tallinn Academy of Music and Theater.
Her teachers have been Valeria Resjan, Carlos and Hamsa Al-Wadi Juris, Evgeny Gashkov, Annamaria Bodoky-Krause and Sten Lassmann. During the studies Alina has been awarded scholarships as recognition of success as a performer. Her collaboration with other musicians have been taking her to perform as a soloist, but also as chamber musician across Europe.
Finnish conductor Sasha Mäkilä is currently Artistic Director of the Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Krasnoyarsk Symphony Orchestra. In a short period of time Mäkilä has made a name for himself as a versatile artist with a broad repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary. His conducting career has taken him to four continents and to major ensembles, such as the Cleveland Orchestra and the Mariinsky Theatre.
Mäkilä has performed at prestigious music festivals such as the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Gergiev Festival Mikkeli, and Pyeongchang Music Festival, and regularly collaborates with world class soloists such as Vadim Repin, Kyung-Wha Chung and Jian Wang.
Originally a cellist, Sasha Mäkilä studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy (Finland) and at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory (Russia). After completing a three-year tenure at Orchestre National de France as maestro Kurt Masur’s assistant he was nominated a Conducting Fellow at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen. Mäkilä is a prizewinner of the Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition (USA, 2006), and in 2013 the University of Helsinki presented him with the Pacius Award for his contributions to Finnish musical life.
During the season 2018-2019 Sasha Mäkilä will conduct his debut at the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and return to Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra and Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. He will take the Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra on tours in Finland and in China, and conduct the opera premieres of Pacius’ Kung Karls Jakt and Rautavaara’s Auringon talo in Helsinki.
